To rebuild shattered lives, Haiti needs stable jobs. Transformational Ventures is re-starting small businesses to create jobs.
Latest Update - Sept, 2010
Community Bank for tent city. We have launched a new Community Bank in a large tent city in Cabaret. Micro-level loans are being made to entrepreneurs, who will use the money to re-start or start their businesses. They must submit a solid business plan and satisfy the loan requirements of our partner organization. We anticipate that 20 people will be able to float loans, most of them disadvantaged women. As the loans are repaid, additional entrepreneurs and their families will participate. All this is being done in the name of Jesus and God's love. The natural spiritual ripple effects and a stronger local church in the area are part of the plan. Construction block business.
We have just launched, through our Hatian partner organization, a business that makes construction blocks. As you can imagine, there is a huge market for building supplies. This company will produce high quality blocks at a competitive price. The money Transformational Ventures contributed (through partnership with CrossWorld and IBEC, two US-based organizations we collaborate with) will be paid back into a revolving loan fund to launch new businesses, and so on. Soap factory & earlier businesses
The soap factory we launched last month is doing well and has employed about 15 people. The other, much smaller businesses are also functioning and generating income for their owners and families. Metrics So far -- and the numbers will keep changing to the positive -- here are the results: Businesses launched or in process: +/- 37 Jobs created or in process: +/- 85 Money applied on the ground: $29,000 The good part is that the businesses launched and jobs created will keep growing even if the money figure stays the same. Such is the nature of sustainable BAM.

------------------------------ Condensed from a New York Times editorial, July 8, 2010 Haiti: A new camp north of Port-au-Prince has 5,000 people and will house thousands more. A joint project of the Haitian govt, UN, US, and aid groups, it is supposed to be a model camp, inaugurated by Haiti’s president.
It has decent tents, drainage and sanitation. The area does NOT have adequate employment for its residents. Too far to walk to Port-au-Prince and too expensive to commute. According to aid workers, tensions among idle, frustrated residents are boiling, making security a growing concern. --------------------------------
The job creation work we are doing is an answer to this pervasive problem in Haiti. Become part of the answer!
